Gaza The Song That Kills

I visited Gaza once. It must have been in 1999.

I travelled around the Israel and the Palestinian territories. Back then it was quite peaceful.
I was only there for a day, but I got a good impression of the city centre, where I spend the afternoon. I ran into a guy on the street, who suddenly started talking to me. I guess I was the only westener around.  He was engaged in the work for human rights, and really wanted to practise his english.

We talked for hours and drank tea together. He showed me around Gaza. It was in august, and the heat was killing me. So we went to the cool shade of a laundry shop, that belonged to a cousin of my host. We drank a cool coke and ate something. I can’t remember what it was.

At that time, the city was quite beautiful with green parks in the centre. Now it’s a sad mess.

I have made a lot of friends all over the world, where I have travelled. I guess it’s easy to get in contact with others, when you are all alone. You need the social dimension in your life. You don’t need war.

I think of my wonderful day in Gaza everytime I see the pictures from the conflict these days. And sometimes I feel sick and just want to go to bed. I wrote this song lying down.

I must lie down
Whenever I
Turn on the news today

And  I sometimes
Wish that someone would come
And take me to outer space

It’s in the first lines from the verse
And the chorus makes it worse
It’s inside every word of the song that kills

And as I lie
I forget
I belong to the world today

It’s in the first lines from the verse
And the chorus makes it worse
It’s inside every word of the song that kills

I am sure that traveling the world and meeting people is a wonderfull thing. There are good and bad in every country and background on earth. What you can do to help is stop being so squimish and educate yourself on the events.Such as Israels history and treatment by the the hamas and other terrorist groups and the long time notoriouse reputation palestinians have for includeing child soldiers and women terrorists in the count of they’r civilian dead to pump people up againt Isreal.Haveing good friends from around the world is one thing,Misleading the public due to your own personal oppinion, while laying down is quit another. The news is probably the worst place to get info that is true and accurate as well. You have a computer obviousley use it do some research, reach out see how you can help your friends by better understanding the world,it’s actions and how this war really came about and what it’s goal is.Writeing music however is good for everyone, thanks for shareing.

Hey Amanda.
I think, I understand what you mean. That my personal quite positive experiences in Gaza isolated from the ongoing conflict are misleading, beacause the Palestinians in general are the bad guys?

I’m sorry, but I don’t agree – please correct me, if I misunderstand!

In the song, I do not in any way imply that either Israel or Palestine are the bad guys or vice versa. I have been in Israel several times and some of my closest friends live there. But they are not the subject for this song – only my own personal sadness is.

I agree with you, that the news in general can be misleading – and sometimes even untrue. But what exactly is true? I think if you a Palestinian he will tell you something else. I am not going to be the judge of that here. Not if the answer has to be one of two possibilities.

All I say is, that I had a wonderful time i Gaza that day back in 1999. I’m sorry if that offends someone. That’s not the purpose of this song.

Thank you for your perspective. War is completely unnecessary. There were steps that should have been taken long ago to solve this conflict. It gets messier by the day. When you travel the world, you never see Ideologues, only people who want to live their lives peacefully. As long as there’s poor people, the power structure will kill them off. Look at that boy, he never had a chance. There has to be an answer staring humanity in the face.

Misleading, Amanda? Who’s being misled? Get a passport and travel to some of these hot spots. It will be a little more real than the fairy tale you’re being fed. The people in Gaza want to live peacefully. They don’t have a choice. Sorry for the tone, but you’ve obviously bought into the lies.

That’s a very important point Batty007!
That when you actually travel, you meet the people who want to live their peaceful everyday lifes. They are everywhere, I tell you.

The question is not about placing the guilt on the source of all this – that’s just futile as we all know. Instead we should focus on who has the balls to be the first mover here, and end this conflict.
